Codebreaking

I am hardly the person to ask about this. It's well known that I "hate cryptic BS" with a passion. Which is why I cheat whenever I can. To that end, I can at least share a few websites with you all that I use when presented with some proxy's cryptic BS. Sometimes you'll get lucky, and the "secret code" will be fairly straight forward. Lucky you, if the randomly capitalized letters actually mean a damn thing.

Here are some very good sites to help you with breaking those long strings of seemingly random numbers or letters:

As I said, I am not someone who enjoys playing with code at all. However, readers and fellow authors both, if you have anything to add to this article, your input is welcome. I'm sure others will appreciate anything you can add to make the task of translating cryptic BS easier.

  1. I don't know if this will help you translate the cryptic BS, but I know that sometimes you can find more of the clues to solving it in the source code of the page you're looking at. Sometimes they also hide things in the images that they put with their words, as a "destegged" image.

Morse code is also used in video, though I'm not sure how often you run across that. You can normally just find the translation for it in google, but I also found a site that will pretty reliably translate it.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Interesting. What exactly is a "destegged" image?

    Thanks for the link.

  3. A destegged image is an image that has a file hidden inside of it. It normally takes a password to access it. Being able to guess, or find, this password depends entirely on how well you know the source.

  4. Since you already know binary, I'm going to assume that you have translated Crowley's message in his last post. In case you haven't:

Life is a joke and death is the punchline. Too bad none of it is funny. I'm running and running like something is after me, but it's not there when I look back. Why am I typing like this, it's bullshit, I don't know this. Why am I here? I can't find the exit. I can't get out. I can't get out. Someone save me. Save me. It hurts it hurts it hurts, but nothing is there. Where is this, I want to leave! I'm dead and I'm in hell. All I have is this to type to. I'm not scared, I'm lonely. I don't want to die like this. Why is he here? Why won't he kill me? Why why why make it hurt, it hurts so much. I can't find a way out.
